Mongar

Mongar lies at a distance of 141 kilometres from the Ura valley and is located in Eastern Bhutan. To enter Mongar you will have to traverse the highest pass of Bhutan, the Thumsing La at a height of 3,800meters.

Mongar is at a height of 1,700 meters and is the district capital. The town rests on a mountain slope and is not located in the valley floor like the other towns in Bhutan.

The Mongar Dzong was constructed in 1953 and is very modern compared to the others in the Kingdom. It was reconstructed by the order of the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. No drawing and nails have been used. The Dzong is an amazing example of how traditional architecture has continued to thrive through the centuries. Apart from being an administrative centre, the dzong houses the Drupka monastic community.
